About Northstowe

The UK’s first new town in 50 years is being built just north of Cambridge.

10,000 new homes, new schools, new parks, new shops, new transport links into Cambridge… a whole new community.

Where is Northstowe?

Northstowe is going to be built between Longstanton and Oakington, with the guided busway to the East. The first phase of building is to the north, next to Longstanton, and so some local services like GPs and small shops will be found there initially.

When will houses be available?

The first residents move into Northstowe April 2017. While for the first few months the rate of people moving in is slow, all five house builders for phase 1 (1500) are starting to build in 2017 and the rate of people moving in is expected to reach 250 households a year. Phase 2 may begin in 2019.

House prices are expected to be substantially lower than in Cambridge.

Are schools planned?

The primary school is built and is opening this September. Part of the school building will provide community space for the first few years.

"The town will eventually have in the region of eight dedicated new schools including pre-school and nursery, primary and secondary, sixth form and special educational needs (SEN) teaching," according to the Northstowe website.

"The first primary school in Northstowe is run by the Diocese of Ely Board of Education and will have three forms of entry (630 places), a 52 place pre-school and an out-of-school club."

"The first secondary school (academy) will open in September 2019 run by Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT) and will open initially for 600 pupils in its first phase and be extended in subsequent phases to 1,200 and finally 1,800 pupils."

What about transportation into Cambridge?

The guided busway stop is adjacent to Phase 1 of Northstowe. Buses run frequently, and are particularly fast to the Science Park (10 minutes).

The A14 is being upgraded so that residents of Northstowe and surrounding villages will have a local road to the edge of Cambridge without needing to get onto the A14.

What about shops and services?

When completed, Northstowe will have two local centres, and a larger town centre, with a wide range of shops and other amenities. For the first couple of years, the nearest services like GP surgery, takeaways and shops will be a short walk away in Longstanton village.
